Quinta do Lago, the five-star premium residential community on the Ria Formosa nature reserve in southern Algarve, launches The Lagula Villa. The turn-key 2,427sq ft, six-bedroom, contemporary villa is for sale fully furnished for €5.95m.
Sean Moriarty, CEO Quinta do Lago, states: “It has been an exciting process to see this home emerge from concept to reality. In the 45 years since Quinta do Lago was founded, the vision of Brazilian real estate entrepreneur, Andre Jordan, the resort community has been the nesting ground for really exciting architectural interpretations.
“Our focus for Quinta do Lago is to progress residential design along the contemporary line. Our demographic is gradually getting younger, coming with ever greater international influences, appreciation for design and the expectation that home and lifestyle go hand in hand. The evolutions at Quinta do Lago as a whole support this new direction.”
Designed by Barcelona-based Lagula Arquitectes with interiors by Algarve-based Dutch firm Pure Allure Interior, the home celebrates traditional Portuguese architecture through contemporary disciplines. It combines light and dark, indoor and outdoor living, entertaining and spaces for reflection.
Orthogonal in form, the sculptural design of the house takes its inspiration from artists such as Eduardo Chillida and Sol LeWitt. An external double ramp ascends to the principal living and entertaining spaces on ground and first floor; it descends to the restful areas below which house the spa and gym, wine cellar and home cinema. Large courtyards at the lower level illuminate the interiors with reflected light and provide private, secluded terraces. The infinity pool with glazed sides sits midway between the lower and ground floors.
At ground level, external cantilevers and a proscenium structure of concrete beams and columns create a sheltered outdoor area and offer corners of privacy. Here the pool, terrace and landscaped garden both connect and create a separation between the villa’s interior rooms and the exterior entertaining areas. The villa’s sliding or pivoting glass panels, six metres high in some areas, enhance the relationship further. Internally the functional areas are at the villa’s core while the entertaining and living areas surround these in an L-shape.
The architectural interiors are designed purposefully as a contrast of light and dark. From ground upwards rooms are bright and transparent, purposely kept white for the buyer to imprint their personal taste. The whiteness also follows the traditions of Portuguese and Mediterranean architecture, remembering Le Corbusier’s position:
“Architecture is the masterful, correct and magnificent play of volumes brought together in light.”
The lower level rooms meanwhile are principally dark slate, as much a reference to the process of excavation and natural materiality as to the stillness of restorative processes found in the spa and gym.
Stairs have been designed in pale timber to enhance visually the journey between the lower and upper levels. Stone walls and glazed panels define the interior spaces.
The infinity pool, accessible from ground and lower levels, is tiled in rich green, to remind of the sensations of open water bathing. Reflected sunlight from the pool paints the living room ceiling with undulating shadows and while also confers bluish light to the slate walls on the lower level, akin to the reflections in tranquil underground grottos.
Marc Zaballa, co-founder of Lagula Arquitectes, says:
“Our design for The Lagula Villa is intended to be a radical yet serene architectural approach. It is a home for convivial living as well as well-being and stillness with oneself. The white and bright architecture invites a joyful life with family and friends. We can imagine plenty of friends invited for a barbecue on the south terrace, children splashing in the swimming pool, or close relatives gathering around the fire pit in the north terrace… all of them enjoying a warm year-round Algarvian climate.”
Esther Zwemmer, co-founder of Pure Allure Interior adds:
“We wanted the interiors to work in harmony with the abundance of light, the beautiful geometries and the unique setting. Natural palettes of cream, sand, stone, powdery mint and blues provide imbue the space with a sense of calm and ease while monochromatic touches provide self-assured elegance. The result we think is a chic, versatile eminently liveable home.”
