The American state of Arizona was one of the most negatively affected regions for property construction and sales thanks to the 2008 financial meltdown. Like its neighbour to the north, Las Vegas, Nevada, foreclosures could be found throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area and empty office buildings abounded. Today the Phoenix metropolitan area is witnessing an extraordinary recovery as construction of offices, multi-family housing, retail and residential can be found in many areas of the city and especially in the Chandler and Gilbert residential corridors.
Arizona has always been a popular location for retirement and second homes. Especially in the winter months when folks come to stay to avoid the harsh winters of the Dakotas and other northern states. It has also become attractive to seasonal residents from Canada and the U.K. The local area does quiet down a bit once people return back to their homes elsewhere to avoid the desert summer heat.
Resort Style Living
This past year my wife and I decided it was time to downsize from our large house to something a bit more manageable for just two people. During our driving around we came upon a location where we now reside, Encanterra Golf and Country Club in San Tan Valley. Once inside this gated community with its 18 hole golf course designed by Tom Lehman you can begin to understand why these resort communities have become so popular especially with baby-boomers going into retirement and wanting more out of a neighborhood than just a house. The golf course has been voted as one of the “Top Ten Private Courses in the U.S.” by GOLF Magazine, Golfweek and LINKS Magazine.
Located in the Sonoran desert about one hour from downtown Phoenix Encanterra has excellent amenities. For its members the country club offers a 60,000 square foot club called La Casa which offers all day meals at its four restaurants and an excellent bar area with a large patio area overlooking the golf course and canyons in the distance. Also included is a full service spa and three swimming pools to cool off in the summer and get a drink. If you want to enhance your culinary skills a demonstration kitchen, La Cocina, is available also.
The community has become popular for hosting weddings and other special events such as the outdoor Good Life Festival that features live performances by nationally known music groups such as the pop music group Heart.
Home models and prices vary with sizes ranging from 1.318 square feet to 3,403 square feet and starting prices ranging from $169,000 to $358,000. There are numerous floorplans to choose from and a design centre to help all the right touches on your home. My experience with the design centre was really quite good with an array of interior ideas from bath, flooring to kitchen components to meet whatever budget you may have. The homes are very environment friendly from solar panel systems to new methods of home insulation.
Our home took about six months to build but this was due to delays thanks to an unusual amount of rain and very busy tradesmen trying to keep pace due to the areas building demands.
The builder, Shea Homes of California, works well with their customers by keeping you in touch with your building supervisor. We decided to make some adjustments during construction and this was handled without any problems.
Even though the community has swimming pools if you want your own this is not a problem either. Our pool was constructed by local builder California Pools. We decided to have our pool tiled and our equipment operates with a handheld remote keypad all of which has worked very well. Planning your landscaping can be done by Shea Homes or an outside contractor. Ours was done by the builder and because of its design it requires little maintenance to take care of.
Once you have taken possession of your property the builder follows up at various time intervals to make sure that your home is functioning properly. If there are any issues they will make arrangements to get things properly taken care of.
Building a home can be a stressful process but in this case I found it easy to get through thanks to the builder and staff.
